Thanks to Murgers Scnes de la vie de bohme, to Puccinis opera, as well as to Charles Aznavours song, we all have some idea, more or less confused, of what literary and artistic bohemia has been in the last two centuries. The word Bohemia always recalls various images, scenes and typical characters in the contemporary readers mind. Marx, Benjamin and Bourdieu, among others, have exploited in different ways its power of evocation. However, there have been few to consider Bohemia in its diverse dimensions. The international conference Bohme sans frontire / Bohemia Without Borders will explore the phenomenon of literary and artistic Bohemia, which is a critical issue involving history, literature and culture from French, Spanish, Canadian and South American perspectives. More than thirty lecturers, hailing from Canada, France,Belgium and the United States, will meet together for the first time at the University of Toronto to discuss, during this bilingual and multidisciplinary colloquium, the mechanisms through which the Bohemian life was adopted, represented and transferred from one culture to another, from the start of the 19th century until now.
